3 Simple Tips to Save More Money – Make Every $ Count

Whether planning to save money towards a vacation, establishing a “rainy day” fund, extra savings toward retirement, paying down credit, holiday gifts, or a HOME down payment, here are 3 simple ways to save a small amount of $$$ that can add up nicely to help towards achieving your savings goal. I present small numbers & examples to get your “Saving Thinking Juices” flowing. You can apply your own numbers based on your spending routines.

Slowing Down Impulse Purchases – when I created my own discipline of taking one less trip to my favorite drive thru on the way to or from work, the nearest convenience store to grab a drink/snack, or eliminated the unnecessary midday trip to the vending machines each work day, I realized instant savings. This became a minimum of $5 per work day savings, $25 for the week, and $1300 for the year.

  1. BOGOs and Coupons when shopping for groceries – I thought I saved at the register by taking advantage of BOGOs and coupons, however never really “saved” the money. Some people have change or coin jugs. I started adding my grocery savings into my jug too. Guess what?? By putting that money aside as actual savings, I saved a minimum of $20 per week, which easily adds up to $1040 for the year. Larger families will show greater savings at the register, and you could commit to saving all that shows at the bottom of the receipt, or 75%, 50 % etc. The simple principle is to turn your savings at the register to ACTUAL SAVINGS.
  2. Online Shopping — What If? – I am old enough to remember piling in the car and going on the family trip to the mall or department store. There was a certain discipline from those days that may have escaped us in our efforts to be more efficient. When we were cruising through the aisles as a family with the shopping cart, at a certain point items did not make it into the cart; even if they were on sale, because the cart was either visibly FULL or the discussion surfaced as to whether that item was truly needed. Sometimes if I really wanted something, something else needed to come out of the cart. With the ease of purchasing online and items showing up at the house, and the barrage of so called sales in our inbox or social media feeds, there also comes the ease of spending without noticeably filling our daily or weekly cart. Ask yourself, WHAT IF I purchased 1 less item per week online? Let’s say it is $15, that would be $780 a year. What if it was $20, $30….

Taken individually, maybe these do not seem like a lot. Collectively in these simple examples with relatively easy rituals, the above examples add up to $3120 for the year. Again, larger families may see a more significant $ opportunity to save for that personal reason or goal.

BONUS thought – use a CREDIT card vs. debit/ autopay through checking when you can. By using 1 credit card WITH A REWARDS PROGRAM and paying it off each month, you not only earn extra money through REWARDS, you may also continue to establish favorable revolving credit. Recurring items like cable bills, cell phone, internet, and gas purchases add up nicely each month to be able to build rewards.
